Emmaus girls volleyball looks for strong finish

Two weeks ago the Emmaus High School girls volleyball team was facing its only streak of the regular season, dropping back-to-back matches to Parkland and Northampton. But since that point, starting with last week, the Green Hornets have posted consecutive victories over Whitehall and Allen.

Hornet head coach Jessica Attieh has seen the improvements from her team not just the last two weeks, but from the start of preseason.

“As the regular season comes to a close, I think the team has progressively improved throughout the season,” said Attieh. “It’s never easy adapting to a new coach and staff and the coaching style that comes along with them. The girls have accepted the expectations set for them and it shows.

“Our JV team is currently undefeated, which speaks volumes to the skill that is being developed for future years. The varsity is 13-3 heading into the final week of regular season and sitting at third in the district. I would say this regular season has been successful.”

Emmaus has a challenging finish to its regular season with matches against Central Catholic on Tuesday and Parkland on Thursday this week. Playing against two of the best teams in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference should only help prepare the Hornets for the league and district championships.

“The more challenging games bring out strengths and areas for improvement,” Attieh said. “The various areas that need improvement are addressed at practices with basic drills and eventually implemented into game play. I’m hoping the girls put what we have been practicing to use during these upcoming matches and into the post season.”

With Attieh leading the Green Hornets into her first postseason as head coach, she knows the challenges that wait, but also the excitement it brings as well.

“Postseason is a time that everything needs to come together,” said Attieh. “It’s a time of pressure and stress, however it shows the toughness and resilience of a team. I’m excited to see the strength we have built together to endure the postseason.

“Each day I try to push the team to be better than yesterday, whether that be performance, sleep, nutrition or overall health. They have been working hard in the gym to better the areas that need improvement and are challenged in the weight room to make themselves better for the team. Every bit of effort from everyone is what will make us stronger as a whole.”

As it stands before the final two matches of the regular season, Emmaus (13-3 overall, 11-3 EPC) would be the three seed in the EPC Tournament. But there are five teams just behind them at 10-4 in the conference, including the Vikettes, the Konkrete Kids, Bethlehem Catholic, Nazareth and Pocono Mountain East.
