Turning Point LV awareness vigil on domestic violence

Turning Point of Lehigh Valley’s annual event for “Domestic Violence Awareness Month” is the “Candlelight Vigil,” 6:30 p.m. Oct. 19, Charles Chrin Community Center of Palmer Township, 4100 Green Pond Road, Palmer Township.

Doors open at 6 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

The theme of this year’s vigil is “Every1KnowsSome1,” emphasizing that domestic violence can happen to anyone and is more prevalent than many realize.

A “Week of Action” is planned Oct. 17 - 23 to engage advocates, partners and the public.

There will be two “GiveForDV Giving Days,” Oct. 19 and Nov. 29.

Each year in October, advocates, survivors and supporters recognize “Domestic Violence Awareness Month.”

This fall, Turning Point of Lehigh Valley is joining the National Network to End Domestic Violence in its national and statewide campaign for “Domestic Violence Awareness Month” and “GiveForDV,” created by the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

The goal of the initiatives is to start a national conversation about domestic violence and how people can contribute to changing the narrative on this overshadowed, but fundamental topic; build on the conversation to raise awareness; increase donations and volunteer efforts, and deepen community engagement by connecting nationwide.

One in four women and one in seven men will experience severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetimes, according to statistics. Anyone, regardless of gender, race, sexual identity-orientation, or socio-economic status, can become a victim of domestic violence.

This year’s campaign theme, “#Every1KnowsSome1,” strives to highlight how common domestic violence is, and that it is more than physical violence.

In fiscal year 2021 - ‘22, Turning Point reached more than 3,500 adults, children and teens in Lehigh and Northampton counties who experienced or witnessed domestic and intimate partner abuse.
