Schurman reaches PIAA East Regional
Emmaus High School golfer Noah Schurman was one of many golfers that battled through difficult conditions Monday at the District 11 Golf Championships at Olde Homestead Golf Course.
The Hornet junior shot 40 on his first nine, which was actually the back nine as the course was flipped in order to have the players finish in front of the clubhouse.
After playing the first four holes of the back nine at 4-over par, Schurman needed a late charge to get back into the top six and earn a trip to next week’s PIAA East Regional Championship.
Schurman played the last five holes of his round at -under par to finish with a 79 and in a three-way tie for fourth place in the 27-player boys Class 3A field. He advanced to the regional tournament where he will attempt to qualify for the state championships.
Schurman made two birdies, nine pars, five bogeys and a pair of doubles, but nothing higher than double-bogey in a steady round. Both birdies came over the final five holes when he needed them most.
Hornet teammate Anna Farnschlader also qualified for districts. She shot 107 for eighth place in the girls Class 3A field.
Liberty’s Matthew Vital won the boys 3A title with a 3-over par 75, two strokes better than teammate Jase Barker. The Hurricanes took the top three individual places to cruise to this year’s team title, their third consecutive team title.
Nazareth’s Camryn Hoff won the girls title with an 85, one stroke ahead of Bangor’s Natalie White.
In Class 2A, Moravian Academy’s Evan Eichenlaub and Palmerton’s Tyler Hager shot the low rounds of the day with 2-over par 74s before the Eichenlaub, the Colonial League champ, won the title in a playoff.
In 2A girls, Mara Dabacher of Moravian Academy took first place with a 94.
