Four Parkland golfers competed in Monday’s District 11 Championships at Olde Homestead Golf Course.
Junior Chloe Chase finished third in the girls field, shooting 92 to advance to next week’s PIAA East Regionals. Parkland freshmen Landen Benner shot 88 to finish 22nd in the Class 3A boys field, while senior Sydni Sundstrom finished off her high school golf career with a 99 Monday to tie for sixth place.
Chase played steady golf, making four pars, 10 bogeys, two double-bogeys and two triples. She finished seven strokes back of winner Camryn Hoff of Nazareth and six shots back of Bangor’s Natalie White. Chase came in one stroke ahead of Northampton’s Madison Salter to seal the third and final berth into next week’s regional tournament.
Benner saw two bad holes spoil what could have been a better round. he took a quadruple-bogey 8 on his first hole, the 10th at Olde Homestead as the nines were flipped to allow players to finish near the clubhouse.
Benner was 8-over par after four holes, but battled back by playing his next five holes at 1-under par to shoot 43 on the front nine. He was moving up the leader board before a 10 on the 15th hole took him out of contention.
A freshman playing in his first district tournament and high school postseason, Benner shot 48 on the back nine for a 91. He made three birdies, three pars, seven bogeys and two triples Monday.
Sundstrom avoided big numbers on her front nine, which was actually the back nine because of the switch. She made two pars, three bogeys and four doubles, but nothing higher to shoot 46 on her first nine. But three triple-bogeys mixed in with three doubles, two bogeys and a par on the back nine gave her a 53 on that nine and 99 overall.
