STUDENT PROFILE - Ryan Aburto, Liberty HS Coordinated by Julie Swan
Grade: 11
Family members: Jennie (mother), Lalo (father), Lucas (brother)
Favorite subject(s): AP Chemistry; the teacher makes things really clear and the labs are fun.
Activities: Editor of newspaper; co-founder of Cooking Club; cross country runner; indoor and outdoor track (long distance runner); drummer for the Grenadier Band; member of National Honors Society
Next steps: I would like to attend a four-year college to study chemistry. I plan to narrow my field of study down during this time.
Career goals: There’s still so much for me to learn and for the science community as a whole to find out, so I would be happy just to be a part of it.
Heroes: My mother, who insisted on becoming a fashion designer despite her teachers telling her she was “too smart” to do such a thing, and my father, who moved to the U.S. when he was 20 to pursue a career as a chef. He became a citizen in 2016.
Hobbies: As previously mentioned, I enjoy running and playing the drums, but I also like drawing in my free time to help refocus my mind.
Current job(s): I’m currently a dishwasher/food runner at the Tavern at the Sun Inn. I take food out to customers and then get to scrub the dishes clean.
Volunteer/community work: Although I haven’t been as active as I would have liked to have been in recent months, I enjoyed my time helping out with the play at my old middle school, Northeast. I was a part of the stage crew in 7th and 8th grade, so it felt good to return and give back the experience that I had.
Likes: I like pretty much anything or anyone that can make me laugh. That’s partially what inspired me to create the satire section of Liberty’s newspaper.
Dislikes: Homework really takes up a lot of my time on weekdays. Some nights I’m up until 11 just to do the bare minimum. However, it really helps me understand what we discuss in class, so I think I just dislike the amount of time in a day.
Greatest accomplishment (so far): I am especially proud of cutting off almost seven minutes from my 5K race time since freshman year.
Advice for peers: It’s okay to mess up sometimes. Just do your best to move past it and don’t let it be the end of you.
Ryan is the Bethlehem Press student reporter at Liberty HS again this year.
