MORAVIAN ACADEMY NEWS Successful fall season By Ellie Capobianco
The school season commenced Aug. 30, but as the winds chill and the leaves change, students have truly begun to settle into their academic schedules, celebrate athletic victories and participate in school wide events.
Country Fair, Moravian Academy’s first public event of the year, was held on the Merle-Smith Campus Oct. 1. The fair featured student performances from vocal groups and orchestral ensembles. Student-run clubs created booths in order to fundraise for future events and young students played in the bouncy-houses and small amusement rides.
Although only a little over one month has passed since the first day of school, the Lions have achieved athletic success through their array of fall sports.
The varsity girls tennis team finished its Colonial League season with an undefeated record and sealed its victory through winning the Colonial League Tournament. In addition to capturing the title, the team also broke school history yet again through winning every single tournament match to do so.
The girls tennis team is not the only Moravian Academy athletics team to have made history in the first month of the 2022-23 school year. Despite having lost eight starting seniors last year, the girls soccer team managed to grasp a victory over Northwestern Lehigh. The Moravian Girls Soccer team had yet to beat Northwestern Lehigh in program history: the Lions won the game 1-0 on their home field.
Junior Alicia Gordon kicked the ball into the side netting to score a beautiful goal in the first half of the game. “I am so proud that I was able to play a part in this milestone for our school’s soccer program,” Gordon said. “Our team has worked incredibly hard this season and I’m so happy that this was reflected in our performance.” The team is currently ranked fourth in the Colonial League and hopes to make it to the league finals, making school history for the second time this season.
The cross country team has an extraordinary freshman runner in their midst. Freshman Virginia Kraus has placed first in every girls cross country meet she has competed in thus far in the season.
The field hockey team is currently ranked second in the Colonial League and hopes to grasp the championship title this upcoming week. Its only loss was to Wilson Area early in the season; however, the team managed to tie Wilson in their latest game.
The boys soccer team has suffered a few losses this season, but junior captain George Husack is hopeful looking forward toward the last few games of the regular season. “We have been pretty solid in the back all season and the offense has hit a rhythm in the past couple of games,” Husack said. “I think the best way to continue our growth is to keep putting in team effort and a positive mentality”.
While there have been a number of athletic accomplishments, upperclassmen are beginning to submit both Comenius Independent Research Project proposals and college applications. The Comenius project allows students the opportunity to investigate an area of interest under a research advisor selected from the campus faculty. Senior Tayden Miller chose to submit a proposal to further research the analytics and strategies of NBA roster construction. “I am excited to have the opportunity to perform my own research on material that is outside of the school curriculum,” Miler said. “It is a rare opportunity that I am grateful to have the opportunity to partake in”.
Students on the Moravian Academy campus look forward to the rest of the school year with a sense of eagerness as a new head of school takes over, school spirit begins to rise, and sports teams compete in championships.
