A roaring start for the Hurricanes
Liberty HS started its 101st school year Aug. 29 and has not slowed down for a second.
The LHS football team currently has two wins, against Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg South. This is already one more win than last year, with four more games left in the season, including the Oct. 29 game against cross-town rival, Freedom HS.
For their halftime show this year, Liberty’s Grenadier Band (LHSGB) presented “The Season of Soul”.
Inspired by the Questlove documentary “Summer of Soul,” the show begins with “Everyday People” by Sly and the Family Stone before moving into “I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5. Next is the bagpipe feature, “My Girl” by the Temptations, culminating in the grand finale of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.
The girls’ volleyball team is currently undefeated with 16 wins. This includes their win against Nazareth at their annual Pink Out game, which raises awareness for breast cancer.
The tradition began years ago as a way to support coach Ginnie Rohn, who passed away in 2011. The game now serves to honor her lasting legacy. Special features of the Pink Out include Chick-fil-a at the concession stand and a decorated hallway outside Liberty’s Memorial Gym.
Girls’ field hockey is in a race to secure the last spot in the playoffs. Their last regular season game was Oct. 11 against Freedom.
The boys’ cross country team is also doing exceptionally well, with seniors Emrick Leshko and Owen Reilly placing first and second respectively at their home meet on Sept. 20. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams raced at the iconic Paul Short Invitational Sept. 30, with the majority of runners achieving the fastest 5K time in their lives.
The Homecoming Game Sept. 30 against East Stroudsburg South featured celebrating members of the Homecoming Court as they walked down the track before the kick off.
The Homecoming King and Queen were announced at this time, with Avante Kendall named king and, in an unprecedented turn of events, two queens were crowned. Ailiegh Mulligan and Lillianna Paranee received an equal number of votes, so both were recognized as Homecoming Queens.
The Homecoming Dance itself took place the Saturday before the game in the science center parking lot.
Liberty students look forward to all upcoming festivities as the fall sports season winds down. Almost all sports teams have had their senior night by this point, which typically includes a walk out with each player and their parents, as well as a small gift and a sign made in their honor.
Football players and cheerleaders will be recognized at the Freedom-Liberty Bonfire Oct. 27. Come out and support your Hurricanes!
