LHS gets a home victory

Winning games has been a struggle for Liberty’s football team as of late, but the Hurricanes were able to celebrate last Friday night.

Liberty (2-4) earned a 44-28 win over East Stroudsburg South at BASD Stadium, marking their first home win in nearly three years.

The last time Liberty celebrated a home victory on their turf was on Oct. 18, 2019 following a 52-27 win over Whitehall.

Friday’s win was a long time coming for the program and head coach Shawn Daignault was happy his team was able to get one in front of their own fans.

“It was great,” said Daignault. “Obviously, my first home win makes it special, but I was more happy about how we won. In the third quarter, it was starting to feel like a lot of other games where we blow a lead but our guys kept answering back and prevented that from happening. I think psychologically that should be a big boost for us.”

Quarterback Tommy Mason had himself a night, accounting for 341 total yards (213 of which were passing yards) and four touchdowns in the win.

The confidence boost comes at the right time for the team heading into a Friday night tilt against top-ranked Emmaus (6-0) on the road.

“First and foremost, we need to believe we can win,” said Daignault of this week’s game. “Ultimately, it will boil down to solid fundamental football--blocking and tackling.”

Freedom improved to 4-2 following a 46-0 win over Allen, as the Pates now prep for a weekend clash against an upstart Whitehall (4-2) squad that has surprised many this season. After being on the road the last two weeks, the Pates settle back in at home this Friday in the marquee showdown in the conference this week.

Bethlehem Catholic (3-3) lost to Northampton 31-21 on Saturday afternoon. It marks the second straight year the Hawks have lost to Northampton, who felt like they earned some more respect with the win, as the K-Kids (6-0) were the lone EPC North team to register a win over the weekend in the crossover games.

“I know we play in the North, but we always say we’re going to be judged how we play against the South teams,” Northampton head coach John Toman said. “We came out and pretty much controlled the game after the opening drive. It didn’t matter whether we won or lost because we have to come back on Monday and get better. It was a good test for us because we haven’t been pushed. This was a good barometer for us.”

Becahi has lost three of their last four games heading into a showdown at Cottingham Stadium against an Easton (2-4) squad that has struggled all season.
