Upper and Lower Milford townships column

Get out a date book and a sharp pencil or favorite pen because your social calendar is about to fill up if you live in Upper or Lower Milford townships.
On Oct. 10, residents of Upper Milford Township, visitors and firefighter fans can enjoy a chicken barbecue dinner hosted by the Upper Milford Western Fire Company, 6341 Chestnut St.
The event is 3 to 6:30 p.m. There is a cost for each dinner and presold tickets are not required. Drive-up purchases are welcome, according to organizers.
On Oct. 12, the Vera Cruz Community Association will host the annual Vera Cruz Halloween parade. Parade participants are needed and can register the day of the parade. The parade will assemble at Mystic Chain Park, Main Road East, 6:15 p.m. The parade begins 7 p.m. The rain date is Oct. 13.
On Oct. 23, the Light in the Night Safe Zone block party will be held 4-6 p.m. at the Upper Milford Township municipal center, 5671 Chestnut St.
The goal of the event is to provide a safe and fun environment for children for Halloween, according to organizers. Families are encouraged to bring items for the Upper Milford Community Food Pantry.
On Oct. 27, the Upper Milford Township Historical Society will get in the spirit of ghoul and ghost season with the presentation titled “The True Story of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”
Mike Jesberger will talk about the atmosphere in early America that provides the backdrop for Washington Irving’s celebrated short story, possibly based on real events in New York’s Hudson Valley. The historical society meets at the township building.
Trick-or-Treat night in Upper Milford Township is scheduled 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.
Trick-or-Treat night in Coopersburg, Lower Milford Township, is scheduled 6-8 p.m. Oct. 28 and the borough will host a Halloween parade 3 to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 16.
The Lower Milford Township Fire Co. #1 continues its monthly hoagie sale fundraiser. Orders are due by 5 p.m. Oct. 16 and pick up is 5 to 6 p.m. Oct. 18, according to the website lowermilfordfire.org. Orders can be placed for hoagies or sandwiches.
Other upcoming events include a Thanksgiving bake sale. Orders are due by noon Nov. 12 and pickup is scheduled noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 20. Funds raised benefit the volunteer fire company.
It would be remiss not to mention the 20th anniversary of the Lower Milford Fall Festival last month. Picture-perfect fall weather brought plenty of festival attendees to the annual event at the municipal building, 7607 Chestnut Hill Road. The event traditionally includes music performances, craft vendors, opportunities to pet animals and food for most appetites. Kudos to the township on another successful event.
Homeowners in both townships may be interested in a workshop on stormwater Oct. 20.
Presented by the Lehigh County Conservation District, Lehigh County Authority and Penn State Extension the free event will be 6-7:30 p.m. in the garage area of the Lehigh County Authority, 1053 Spruce Road, Allentown.
Participants will enjoy a light dinner and receive a native shrub.
Participants will learn how to use sustainable practices to impact local water resources and improve water quality.
