Hurricanes make a statement in victory
If there was ever any question about how good Liberty’s volleyball team is this year, they answered it in resounding fashion last week.
The Hurricanes (11-0) continued their undefeated season with a sweep over Emmaus for a statement victory.
It was the first loss of the season for Emmaus (11-1), leaving Liberty and Parkland (9-0) as the only undefeated teams in the conference.
“It is a huge confidence booster for us,” said Liberty head coach Connor Swigart. “Emmaus is a really good team and it was great to see us rise up to the level we needed to win. They jumped on us early with lots of energy and a good game plan. We were able to compose ourselves, show some resilience and get back to playing Liberty volleyball. You hope to come in and sweep each team you play but to see it happen and to see how we responded to adversity was really great to see.”
The win puts Liberty at the top of the East Penn Conference and solidifies that the Hurricanes may be the team to beat this year.
“Anytime you can beat another undefeated team it makes a statement to our team that we are headed in the right direction,” Swigart said. “Emmaus is historically a good program and it says that we are on that level now. Having said that, it also means we need to continue working hard each day so we can keep making those statements throughout the season. Each team we play will be giving us their best effort so we need to be on point no matter who our opponent is.”
The ‘Canes have three matches on deck this week with Pocono Mountain West, Nazareth and Wilson. With the team firing on all cylinders thus far, Swigart just hopes they can improve even more each day.
“Certainly we have a new level of confidence,” he said. “We need to be able to parlay that into finishing the season strong and peaking for playoffs. We need to make sure we stay healthy and stay together as a team as matches get harder.”
Bethlehem Catholic (7-3) has won three straight and face East Stroudsburg South (0-12) and Freedom this week.
The Pates (3-8) have struggled this season, as they’ve dropped their last four contests and don’t anything easier on deck for this week with Pocono Mountain East (11-2) and Becahi on the docket.
