Becahi girls soccer picks up key wins
Bethlehem Catholic’s girls soccer team isn’t planning on losing any more matches after statement victories over Northampton, 3-0, on Sept. 20, and Freedom, 2-0, on Sept. 22.
“The Northampton game was the turning point,” said Becahi assistant coach Kaleb Missmer, who is also the nephew of Konkrete Kids’ girls soccer coach Mike Missmer.
The win was also a first for the Golden Hawks who have never beaten Northampton.
Goals against the Kids were scored by Summer Hill, Gabby Mutis, and Ashley Zuniga.
“We started really tough, Parkland, Emmaus, all the big schools. They’re now out of the way, so now we can move forward with the rest of our season and hopefully keep progressing,” said Becahi head coach Brad Kratzer.
Scoreless at halftime on Friday against Freedom, Hill’s goal in the 51st minute put the Hawks on the board.
“I won the ball, cut in between two players, took it across the middle, and then I just hit it with my left, and it went over the keeper’s head,” Hill said. “The first half was a pretty even game, but the second half, we worked together better and harder. Pretty much win 50-50 balls and put in a little more effort and it showed. I was quite nervous, but I’m glad we came out with the win.”
Hill scored the Hawks’ second goal in the 57th minute when she got the ball at midfield and dribbled past a Patriot defender.
“We made a slight change today, playing Summer at forward instead of the midfield,” said Coach Kratzer. “The first half was very shaky, but the girls bought into what we needed to do in the second half, and then we were able to distance ourselves.”
Freedom had two opportunities to score in the final seven minutes of the game. On the second attempt, Patriot forward Grace Joseph took a shot on goal, but Jasmyn DeWit cleared it out for the Hawks.
“There was just a missed clearance, and they scrambled there, and thankfully we were able to clear it and preserve the clean sheet,” Kratzer said.
