SHS names student of the week

Q. In what grade are you currently enrolled?

A. I am currently in the 12th grade at Salisbury High School.

Q. Who is in your family? Please provide the first names of your family members: parents, siblings and pets.

A. My family consists of four people (including myself): my mom, Beatriz Hernandez, my dad, Jesse Hernandez and my younger sister, Gabriela Hernandez.

Q. What is your favorite subject? Why?

A. I actually have two favorite subjects: English and Spanish. My all time favorite core subject would have to be English because I’ve always loved reading, learning about literature and grammar and writing. I am currently enrolled in AP Literature and Composition. My other favorite subject would be Spanish because my family is Hispanic, so, learning more about our language and culture allows me to be closer to my family and able to communicate better with them!

Q. Have you received any special awards or recognition?

A. I’ve been recognized in my schools for my good grades and hard work, so I’ve been inducted into National Honor Society three times (once in middle school and twice in high school) and I have received the high honor roll and honor roll awards as well. Additionally, I had the privilege of singing the national anthem during my junior year at a few basketball games here at SHS.

Q. Are you involved in any extracurricular activities?

A. Yes, I am a member of National Honor Society and I am secretary of the STARs Club, where we stand against drugs, drinking and distracted driving. Lastly, I am a part of the theater club where I will be playing a lead role in our upcoming fall production, “Radium Girls.”

Q. What is your next goal after high school?

A. My goal after high school is to attend a four-year college and receive my bachelor’s degree.

Q. What do you consider your biggest challenge to date?

A. What I consider to be one of my biggest challenges to date is how often my family has relocated. I’ve attended about seven different schools, so it’s been difficult to maintain friendships, become accustomed to a new environment and keep up with my challenging academics. But, with my family’s unwavering support and motivation and the will to do well in school, I’ve managed to balance it all out.

Q. For what would you like to be remembered?

A. I would like to be remembered as a productive member of the community, a friend and a hard worker.

Q. Whom do you admire? Why?

A. I admire my parents most of all, because they both have worked so hard throughout their entire lives to provide for my sister and I. I look up to them and I want to learn to be as diligent, selfless and creative with so very little, as they both are. They’re always there for me when I need them and keep me motivated to always strive to do my best in anything I set my mind to.

Q. Do you have any advice for your peers?

A. My advice to my peers is to never give up on trying, because there is always something out there for you, whether you see it now or not. Always continue to strive to become the best version of yourself and create the best life that YOU want to live.
