Schurman leads Hornet golf team as season winds down

The Emmaus High School golf team is 9-5 this season with two matches left in the regular season.

The Hornets had won nine straight matches before losing three in a row last week to Liberty (404-421), Northampton (407-436) and Stroudsburg, which finished tied at 404-404 before the Mountaineers won on tiebreaker criteria.

Emmaus has a young team that’s still gaining experience after most of last year’s line up graduated, including three state qualifiers.

Junior Noah Schurman has been the team’s top player this season and a number of different players have helped fill out the top five scores in matches throughout the season.

In the loss to Northampton, Schurman, junior Andrew Kleist and senior Nate Sauter led the team with scores of 85. The Kids had five players shoot 84 or less in the match, led by Michael Seidick’s 77.

In the loss to Liberty back on Sept. 1, Schurman shot 79 at Brookside Country Club, while junior Colton Bieber contributed an 82, senior John Hughes carded an 86 and Kleist and Sauter both shot 87. Liberty’s Matt Vital, the defending District 11 champ, earned medalist honors in the match with a 72, while his brother Mike shot 78 to lead their team to the win.

Emmaus picked up three wins on Aug. 31, scoring 421 as a team to beat Freedom (444), Central Catholic (466) and East Stroudsburg North, which had just three players compete in the match.

Schurman shot the low score of the match with an 81 at Brookside. Junior Zachary Yenawine (83), Joshua Teichman (85), Sauter (85) and Zachary Madigan (87) rounded out the Hornets’ top five in the match.

Central had two players shoot 88 in Tanner Temple and James McCarthy, while Freedom’s Krish Patel (83) and Dhruv Patel (88) led their team.

In a win over Pleasant Valley a day earlier, Schurman carded a match-low score of 75, followed by junior Zachary Yenawine with a 76. Kleist (83), Ryan DeLong (83) and Colton Bieber (85) rounded out the top five in that match, which the Hornets won 402-44 at Indian Mountain Golf Course.

The Hornets went 2-1 at a meet against Nazareth, East Stroudsburg South and Pocono Mountain West at Pocono Farms on Aug. 23. Emmaus shot 425 and fell to Nazareth (395) while beating the Cavaliers (514) and Panthers (592). Schurman shot the low round of the match with a 76.

Emmaus has matches this week against Pocono Mountain East and Southern Lehigh. They will move on to the EPC Championship tournament on Monday, Aug. 19 at Olde Homestead. A week later will be the District 11 qualifying tournament, followed by the district championships the first week in October.
