City rivalry series set to start this weekend
For Bethlehem Catholic, their 21-6 loss to Nazareth last week will be a football game to remember this season.
“It was very physical, “ recounted Becahi head coach Kyle Haas. “It was fun to watch. Our defense played outstanding. We did a very good job on their quarterback (Sammy) Sasso. He is very, very good.”
The Golden Hawks suffered their first loss of the season (2-1) and they will prepare for a battle of Bethlehem with nearby rival Liberty Friday night.
Haas stated how his squad was flagged for offsides penalties due to Nazareth ‘s aggressive play calling on defense.
“We must have had a first and 15 at least three times, and once we had a first and twenty,” he stated. “They did a lot of chatting and something may have to be done about it. Our center couldn’t hear the quarterback a couple of times.”
He credited his offense for a steady performance and thought his squad was ready for another big win.
“We were down 14-6 and thought we were going to take it in,” he stressed. “We called a play that we shouldn’t have called. Their safety could see it coming, and he stepped in front of our receiver and returned it for a pick six.
“But we have things that we can fix at this point. We know what we can control, and we like where we are.”
The Golden Hawks will meet a Liberty squad (1-2) who Haas believes truly isn’t reflective of their record.
“They have a good quarterback who is mobile and that worries me,” said Haas. “They also have a good wide receiver and are big up front. They have been in every game they have played and have been ahead. They have had trouble finishing games.
“Liberty had a nice win over Stroudsburg last week, and they can be a dangerous football team.”
“This is a different football game because it is about Bethlehem, and our kids should be pumped for it.”
