Hickory Street bridge and Church Street projects move forward in Macungie
At the Sept. 6 Macungie Borough Council meeting, the Hickory Street Bridge and Church Street projects were discussed.
A multimodal grant was approved for the bridge and the rebuilding of South Church Street. The amount approved is $863,666 with the borough agreeing to match at $370,143.
There will be a meeting Oct. 3 with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the borough engineer to discuss the project scope.
The HVAC system was discussed for the Macungie Police Department station and Macungie Borough Hall.
There is a $9,600 fee charged by the engineer for design if needed when going for bids. This design is necessary to tell contractors exactly what is needed. The fee was discussed by council as to necessity of this action and fee.
A motion was approved to proceed with police department’s HVAC system.
The lateral sewer video is proving effective, according to meeting discussion. A pipe was pitched the wrong way in Stone Hill Meadows and was discovered by this video and then corrected.
A resident again expressed concern over fire hydrant problems within the borough. There have been two major fires in the borough. The resident expressed concern over the fire department.
A borough resident who owns properties at 143 and 144 E. Main St. has requested that funding for creek retention banks should be done by the resident. The resident has researched this problem and determined that his property ends at the bank. Further discussion followed about this issue. The other side of the creek is owned by Macungie Memorial Park. The property line used to be in the middle of the creek. The resident is seeking legal advice.
The yard sale permit policy was discussed again. A yard sale goes on during the Wheels of Time. A permit was never needed before. Two days before the event the people involved were given notice they must have a permit. This is being further researched.
The trash and recycle bid results were discussed. There were three bids with the lowest being Whitetail Disposal Inc. A representative from Whitetail Disposal Inc. spoke about the various forms of collecting trash and recycling, including the various trucks that do the collecting. Whitetail Disposal was accepted as the new trash hauler with a five-year contract with manual hauling to be the type of collection.
Macungie Ambulance Corps presented a new funding request. The corps requested $16,000 necessary to aid in providing services to the residents of Macungie. This will be considered during budget talks.
Nina Solivan, the assistant to the manager, is being trained to be the borough manager. Questions arose over the length of time needed to accomplish this as well as experience and abilities for this job. It was determined before employment that it would be a two-year training program.
Solivan’s background includes municipal experiences.
An executive session was held over personnel matters and real estate.
