Curtain Rises: Playhouse honors George B. Miller

A Lehigh Valley icon, as well as a national theater icon will be honored when Pennsylvania Playhouse presents “A Tribute to Sondheim & George B. Miller,” 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at the theater, 390 Illick’s Mill Road, Bethlehem.

Stephen Sondheim (1930 - 2021) was a “significant force in shaping the Broadway we all know and love today, and his music and shows have entertained millions for over half a century,” says the revue’s director John Corl.

“We pay tribute to the man and his music with a cabaret devoted to some of his most memorable songs,” Corl says.

In 2021, the Lehigh Valley lost one of its own theater icons when George B. Miller died.

“George was an actor, director, teacher, mentor, radio show host, friend and so much more to so many people. He touched hundreds of lives in the Lehigh Valley theater community and well beyond,” Corl says.

Corl says the cabaret will be a “tribute within a tribute” and will give Miller the recognition he deserves.

Miller, who died April 13, 2021, directed and performed at many theaters in the area, including Pennsylvania Playhouse, Northampton Community College and Touchstone Theatre.

Miller was artistic director of Selkie Theatre, which he founded with his wife, Kate Scuffle. They also co-founded the former Theatre Outlet, Allentown. The duo produced shows in the United States and Ireland.

The evening at the Playhouse will feature Sondheim music from “West Side Story,” “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “Gypsy,” “Company,” “Sunday in the Park with George,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Into the Woods” and more.

Performers include Sam Ferrante, Tiah Fontno, Alec Garrido, Micah Henning, Gabrielle Hondorp, Michelle Hubbard, Kim Mertz, Joshua Myers, Jaedon Muhl, Grace Oddo, Elizabeth Ott, Sarah Rainey, Carole Silvoy, Brianna Storm, Jenny Taylor, Taylor VanKooten and Trish Steele.
