Football team set for trip north this week
Northampton had one of its most unique starts in its football history against Stroudsburg last week, being down 4-0 on a pair of safeties in the first half.
From there, however, it was all Konkrete Kids, scoring 41 unanswered points in another dominating performance.
Yet, head coach John Toman didn’t initially see that possible scenario.
“Stroudsburg came out and had a lot of energy and moved the ball downfield,” said Toman. “We ended up backed up in our own end and bad punt snaps resulted in safeties.
“We felt in the first half that we were pinned in deep and lost the field position game. The first half was a combination of bad field position and untimely mistakes.”
Toman saw his club emerge after halftime.
“In the second half, we were much more focused,” added Toman. “We executed well.”
Caden Henritzy ran 65 yards on 15 carries and scored a touchdown. Bill Struhldreher added 37 yards on the ground with a score.
The Kids continued their two-quarterback system, and it produced another successful night. Antonio Russo was 7-for-10 for 64 yards and added 62 yards rushing, while AJ Slivka had a touchdown and 23 yards rushing. Slivka had two rushing touchdowns.
Northampton will now take its 2-0 mark into East Stroudsburg North (1-1) Friday night.
ES North is coming off its first victory over Pocono Mountain East in three years, as they posted a 20-14 win. Quarterback Romeo Carmen-King ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, the latter with 18 seconds left in the game.
“We feel we match up well with them,” said Toman about his upcoming opponent. “They got their first win last week, but we will look to use our size and speed accordingly.”
PREDICTION: The Kids blasted East Stroudsburg North, 61-8, last season on their own turf ... At the time of this writing, Northampton was ranked 39th in MaxPrep’s state Class 6A bracket. The Kids began the week seeded second behind Emmaus (2-0) in the District 11 Class 6A bracket. ES North was fourth in the district Class 4A bracket ... Wide receiver Tymir Williams continues to be a surprise for the Kids, as he had four catches against Stroudsburg ... Jaelen Richardson had a pair of interceptions and Henritzy had one against Stroudsburg ... Mikey Williams and Brett Rickert were the leading tacklers with 3.5 apiece against the Mounties ... The Kids take a trip north before they return home against Allen, but they shouldn’t be slowed. Their two-quarterback system has worked, and their aggressiveness continues to be a key. They will have to limit Romeo’s chances to be successful and not have a long ride home ... Yet, they overcome a slow start last week, and don’t expect it to happen again. Kids will be focused and locked to make it an early night ... Coach Ronalds will owe me a cheesesteak from Sal’s in Wind Gap ... K-KIDS,38-12.
