Field hockey teams off to slow starts

Liberty is the only Bethlehem team to scratch a victory from the field hockey season thus far, as all three local schools have come out of the gate slowly.

The Hurricanes 4-1 win over East Stroudsburg South in the opener has been followed by a 7-1 setback to Nazareth and a 3-1 loss to Owen J. Roberts.

Still, the losses haven’t depleted head coach Jill Dorn’s confidence in the potential for her group.

“I feel that the team is in a position to where we are going to continue to improve as the season goes on,” said Dorn. “Starting the year without the complete team means we are preparing players in their absence to increase our depth. We are OK to get this experience in now and are being led by Sarah Fitzpatrick and Ruby Miller in the middle.”

Liberty (1-2) gets a chance to get back on track this week against Hazleton and Lake Lehman in a pair of nonconference matchups to hopefully get them back to .500 before getting back into EPC play.

“We have tremendous leadership who know exactly what our program expectations are,” Dorn said. “We are proud of what we are gaining and the quality minutes we are able to get some of our younger athletes. Bottom line, they are learning more about the importance of team this year than anything.”

Freedom (0-3) and Bethlehem Catholic (0-3) are both struggling out of the gates, as the Pates have failed to score through three games, but look to get some momentum this week with contests against Pleasant Valley and Becahi.

The Hawks are in the same boat as Freedom in the scoring department, but play Pocono Mountain West and then have Thursday’s showdown at Freedom.
