Solomon’s UCC hosts annual Polka Worship Service Sept. 11

Solomon’s UCC in Macungie will host its annual “Polka Worship Service” 10:15 a.m. Sept. 11.

This traditional liturgical music service will be provided by the Heidelberg Brass Band from Lancaster County under the direction of Rev. Glenn Beard Jr., who also leads the congregation in song.

The band features four trumpets, a baritone, a trombone and drums and has performed for more than six decades in Lancaster and Berks counties and more recently Lehigh County at Solomon’s UCC in Macungie.

The worship service songs are inspiring and set to catchy, familiar polka tunes such as “Beer Barrel Polka,” “Pennsylvania Polka,” “Baruska – Bohemian Polka” and “Liechtensteiner Polka,” to name a few.

Initially it sounds crazy to think of these songs being the basis of a church worship service; however, the words are befitting of any church hymnal. Every tune is fun to sing yet is respectful and appropriate for church.

The polka service is one of Solomon’s favorites.
