Coplay: Sign up for walks, runs on the IRT

The Ironton Rail Trail has two charitable runs on Saturdays in September.

The first is Sept. 10 to benefit pediatric cancer research, and the second is Sept. 17 to benefit mental health services.

Both start 9 a.m. and are a walk/run.

Registration is 8 a.m. at the Coplay Parkway pavilion.

Reminder: Upcoming entertainment at Coplay Saengerbund, 205 S. Fifth St., includes Common Bond Sept. 9, American Street Band Sept. 16, Smith Compound Band Sept. 23 and Stereotype Sept. 30.

The Coplay Saengerbund is holding its Oktoberfest event 2:30-7 p.m. Sept. 11.

Enjoy quality entertainment including an Oktoberfest singalong, the Auerhahn Schuhplattler Dancers and the Masskrugstemmen.

Enjoy imported German beers, authentic German food and gemutlichkeit.

The event, organized by the heritage committee, is open to the public.

There is cost for admission.

St. John’s Lutheran Church, 18 S. Third St., is holding a rally day 9 a.m. Sept. 11.

It is the start of the children’s Sunday school.

The annual hot dog social will follow, set for 10:30 a.m. in the social hall.

The Twilight Concert Series continues at Community Plaza, North Second and Chestnut streets, with Third Hand Trio 6-9 p.m. Sept. 14.

Coplay Mayor Stephen Burker shared a quote of the month for September: “Respect people who wear glasses. They pay money to see you.”

St. John’s Lutheran Church will hold a shepherd’s pie community pickup dinner 4-6 p.m. Oct. 1.

This is a free dinner, with donations requested.

The Coplay Borough Park and Recreation Committee is planning a craft fair 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 1 and 2 at the Coplay Parkway pavilion.

If your pet has been misbehaving, St. John’s may have the remedy. It is holding its annual blessing of the animals 2 p.m. Oct. 2 in the parking lot by the church.

The Saengerbund heritage committee is also planning a Weinlesefest (grape dance) event for 3-6 p.m. Oct. 16.

It is a celebration of the grape harvest and the making of new wine.

Music will be provided by the Emil Schanta Band.

There is an admission fee.

The Halloween parade is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 18.

Coplay’s trick-or-treat night is 6-8 p.m. Oct. 28.

St. John’s is planning a yearlong celebration in 2023 for the its 150th anniversary.

A Coplay Garden Club tip: Now is a great time to plant new perennials and shrubs. They have a better chance to establish themselves during the milder fall months than in spring.
