Coplay expected to name police chief

Coplay Borough Council is expected to appoint a new police chief at its next meeting, set for Sept. 13.

Borough Police Officer Ryan Emerich has been the interim police chief since the Sept. 2 retirement of Chief Vincent Genovese. Upon approval, he would be sworn in by Mayor Steve Burker after the meeting.

Emerich will be in attendance at the upcoming Coplay Borough Twilight Concert Series to meet with residents. The concert will be held 6-9 p.m. Sept. 14 at Community Plaza, North Second and Chestnut streets.

Emerich, during the Sept. 6 workshop meeting, indicated the police department will be actively involved in the Halloween parade and will also be present during trick-or-treat night in the borough.

The Halloween parade is set for Oct. 18, and trick or treat is scheduled for Oct. 28. Council will take an official vote to approve both events at the next meeting.

Fire Chief Brandon Bechtel said the fire department received a FEMA grant in the amount of $39,761.90. This grant will be used for purchasing gas meters and thermal imaging cameras.

Councilman Rick Kern asked Director of Public Works Paul Boyle when the new tot lot playground equipment will be installed. Boyle said this is expected to take place in late September or early October.

Kern also mentioned the possibility of using an LSA grant to repave the existing basketball court. The estimated amount for this project will fit with the grant being received.

Councilwoman Janet Eisenhauer noted the borough advertised for the position of borough secretary since the current secretary, Kimberly Bachman, will be leaving her position.

Eisenhauer also announced Coplay Public Library qualified to receive a grant for the installation of handicap-accessible doors.

Burker reported Coplay Community Days was very successful. He specifically thanked Boyle and his crew for all of the work they put into the preparation and cleanup of the event.
