Allen Twp. supervisors discuss potential Wawa sketch plan

Allen Township Board of Supervisors met Aug. 23 to discuss a sketch plan proposing a Wawa at the southwest corner of Savage Road and Route 329.

Civil engineer Lindsey Breylinger said the building itself would be around 6,000 square feet and the fuel canopy would have eight pump stations for a total of 16 fueling pumps. The parking lot would contain 57 parking spaces, two of which would be dedicated to air pumps.

There are three proposed access points: a signalized access on the west of the development, a shared access drive parallel to the southern property line and a limited access point off Savage Road.

In order to comply with Allen Township’s zoning code, project developers are seeking two variances from the zoning hearing board.

One variance, if approved, would allow the eight proposed fueling stations. The township’s zoning code normally only allows seven fueling stations and a total of 14 fuel pumps.

The other variance deals with the fuel canopy. The proposed canopy is 7,150 square feet in size, while Allen’s zoning code only allows a 7,000-square-foot canopy, Breylinger said.

The board then discussed a few of its concerns regarding the project, the biggest of which was truck traffic in and around the Wawa parking lot.

Supervisor Gary Behler said truck traffic was going to happen, especially due to where Wawa will be located.

Wawa typically does not cater to trucks, and the developers said they’re not going to encourage anything but will make sure they can get out.

The next step for the project developers and engineers is to bring the sketch plan in front of the planning commission for more detailed feedback.

In other business, the board also made a motion to move the Nov. 8 meeting to Nov. 1 due to conflicts with Election Day.

The board’s next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 13 in the fire company building, 3530 Howertown Road.
