Alburtis Halloween Parade tentatively Oct. 29

The Aug. 31 Alburtis Borough Council meeting began with only a small comment about the speeding in town. A lot of roadwork is going on and traffic is getting heavier on roads, specifically Franklin Street.

Mayor Kathleen Palmer announced the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection made a request to the community to begin conserving water usage by about 5-10%. This is due to the drought in the area.

The previous meeting minutes, bills for payment and fiscal consultant’s report were all approved without comment.

East Penn’s Children’s Fitness Academy sent a letter about their concern for children crossing West Penn Avenue that need to get to class. The letter indicated there are a lot of damaged or missing speed bumps and action needs to be taken.

A new distribution center was opened right off West Penn Avenue so traffic has increased. The discussion was about installing a permanent speed bump. A decision was made not to act on this, as costs could be extremely high and there is a lot of foot traffic crossing many other streets in the borough.

Next was a discussion on getting a new utility truck or police vehicle. Quotes on costs need to still be received. The vehicle would not arrive until next year so this was just a conversation and action will be taken at a later meeting.

An update on crack sealing around the borough followed. It was stated something needs to be done before winter, but there are roads in need of work beyond just filling in some cracks. No decision was made, as the public works department will need to provide a list of all that needs to be done with an estimated cost.

Councilman Hector Moss led a charge for an Alburtis Halloween Parade. He has met with numerous organizations and took a poll on Facebook. The response has been overwhelmingly positive with a large amount of participation anticipated. There will be no cost to the borough. The possible date is 6 p.m. Oct. 29. No official route has been decided yet.

The council approved the date for the parade. There will be more discussion on logistics for the event at a later meeting.

Following this, the meeting was adjourned. The next meeting is Sept. 14 at 260 Franklin St. Alburtis.
