Liberty proved they could compete with Central Catholic last Saturday night, but the Hurricanes weren’t able to close things out in a 34-28 defeat at J. Birney Crum Stadium.
Central amassed 228 yards of rushing on the night, led by a four touchdown performance by Caiden Shaffer, including the game-winner with 7:19 left in the fourth quarter to help lead Central to a come from behind victory.
Liberty led 14-7 and 21-13 throughout the game with their final touchdown coming in the third when Anthony Askerneese hauled in a 33-yard score from Tommy Mason less than a minute into the second half to put them ahead 28-20.
That would end their offensive output however, as Central’s defense stifled them the rest of the way, while they pounded their way with the ground attack to come back for the win.
Mason had himself a game, rushing for 98 yards and two scores and passing for 135 yards and a touchdown. He also threw two interceptions.
Jayden Rosado added 85 yards on the ground rushing, while Nico Sciarra led Liberty with four receptions for 55 yards.
The Hurricanes (0-1) now look to get back to .500 this Friday night when they host Whitehall at BASD Stadium.
The Zephyrs lost to Bethlehem Catholic last week 35-7.
