Football team set to host Mounties next

For starters, there were few flaws.

Northampton began its defense of its East Penn Conference (EPC) North title with an impressive 50-8 thumping of Pocono Mountain West on its home turf last Friday night.

This was a team that had some voids to be filled, but their opening-night performance didn’t leave too many questions. With their win, Northampton (1-0) will host Stroudsburg (1-0) Friday night.

“Communication and execution on both sides of the ball was very good,” said second-year head coach John Toman. “There were no timeouts wasted because we didn’t have the right guys on the field. We did have one missed assignment on offense that led to a field goal.”

The Konkrete Kids jumped out to a 29-8 lead at halftime and never looked back. Junior running back Caden Henritzy rushed for 97 yards and scored three touchdowns. Sophomore Tymir Williams was a prime target with five catches for 71 yards. Senior Jeff Head returned a fumble 40 yards for a score.

Senior quarterback Antonio Russo was 10-for-11 for 140 yards, and junior AJ Slivka was 6-for-7 for 86 yards. Each quarterback had a touchdown pass. Northampton rolled up 29 first downs in the game.

Toman plans to continue with his dual-quarterback system.

“Both quarterbacks performed well,” said Toman. “They earned the opportunity to compete for reps in practice this week. We were very efficient with 29 first downs.”

Defensively, the Kids limited the Panthers to 105 yards of total offense, allowing just 22 yards on the ground. Sophomore Gavin Grell fell on a loose ball in the end zone to register a safety.

“We did a solid job on defense,” added Toman. “But we need to get more pressure from our front four.

“We did kick a field goal and covered kickoffs well. But extra points were a struggle all night.”

The Kids will be back at Al Erdosy Stadium Friday night to host the Mounties. It looms as an interesting matchup.

“I think we match up with Stroudsburg,” said Toman. “We will need to contain (Andre) Reames on offense and defense. We will need to control the ball and tempo.”

PREDICTION: Reames, a senior, was a 1,000-yard plus rusher last season. Senior linebacker Gio Silva was the team’s leading tackler last year ... The Kids have the potential to run the table through their first four games before they will meet East Stroudsburg South in a likely league-crown showdown in Week 5 ... Kids’ junior Tristan Pinnock record a game-high 3.5 tackles and senior Caden Reph had a sack ... Being at home will benefit the Kids and keep their momentum going. Kids were in midseason form last week, and the trend will continue. Assistant head coach Kevin Ronalds will owe me a tomato pie from Roseto ... K-KIDS, 38-17.
