PHS tops Hornets in early-season match

While most fall sports teams just got their regular seasons underway last Friday, high school golfers have been competing since mid-August when their counterparts in other sports were in their first official week of practice.

Parkland won eight of its first 12 matches this season, including a one-stroke victory over Emmaus, 420-421 in the season opener on Aug. 16

“I am happy with our start, but we have a lot of tough matches later in the season,” said Parkland head coach Ryan Kilpatrick. “We did beat Emmaus by one shot 420-421 at Twin Lakes to open the season. That was my first time beating them, so it’s been a little while.”

The Trojans graduated their top player from last season, Jimmy Kelly, who finished in the top 12 at both leagues and districts last season.

Last year’s Parkland team went 9-6 overall and 8-7 in East Penn Conference play.

Senior captain Sydni Sundstrom returns this season after tying for eighth place in the girls district tournament last season and was fourth at the EPC girls tournament.

Junior Chloe Chase, who finished third in last year’s EPC girls tournament, is also back this season along with junior Jaffer Mujtaba.

A couple freshmen are also expected to help the team this season in Landen Benner and AJ Sundstrom.

“Solid team this year,” said Kilpatrick. “Everyone has the ability to shoot low 80s and high 70s.”

Parkland’s regular season continues through their final match, Sept. 15 against Bethlehem Catholic. The league tournament is slated for Sept. 19 with the District 11 qualifying tournament a week later.
