The Parkland girls tennis program aced three opponents during the 2022 season’s opening week.
The Trojans breezed through Pocono Mountain East, Bethlehem Catholic and Central Catholic by 7-0 scores. In the Aug. 24 win over the Hawks, Parkland coach Michael Hingston’s team showcased its versatility and depth.
“If we perform at our best we’re going to be in the mix this year,” Hingston said.
Newcomer Lexie Warsing playing No. 1 had little trouble with Becahi’s Cara Maglio in a 6-2, 6-2 victory. No. 2 Leah Zolotareva and No. 3 Gigi Leonzi had easier times in 6-2, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-4 wins over the Hawks’ Madi Lennert and Lena Windhagen.
“Lexie has an all-around good game and has no weaknesses,” the coach said.
The doubles contingents dominated their competitors in straight set wins. Anshika Gupta and Sophia Petrocelli won 6-1, 6-1, while Sophie Elijovich and Aarohi Vaze wiped out their opposition in 6-0, 6-0 victories. No. 4 Kiera Miles and Ali Silman took care of business with a 6-1, 6-0 win in their match. Even a fourth doubles team - Bell Matsun and Moriah Thomas - were easy 8-1 winners over Bethlehem Catholic’s Kylie Parkes and Hannah Mishkovich.
“Their games compliment one another,” Hingston said of his doubles teams. “They really have good chemistry and it just looks like they’re going to click.”
Miles and Silman impressed Hingston during the first week of practice and during the offseason.
“Both girls worked hard on their games,” Hingston said. “They improved and I’m very proud of them.”
