Girls XC will challenge for EPC, D-11 titles

The Parkland girls cross country team may not have won any league or district hardware last season, but that doesn’t mean the Trojans didn’t have a fine squad. This year the question could come down to this - are they ready to become champions?

The Trojans’ 2021 season resulted in a 16-1 regular season, and that could be a factor in the ‘22 version.

“Our returning girl runners are prepared to work hard through the challenges of the season,” Parkland head coach Stephen Ott said. “Last season’s experience should help with our expectation for challenging for league and district titles.”

Ott, known for his positive disposition and encouraging his athletes to accomplish their goals through their determination and skill, is preparing this squad to be their best when their best is needed most.

“We hope to stay healthy and see times drop as we build toward the championship races at the end of the season,” he said.

Being great in the clutch requires being great when no one is watching. In cross country, that’s during the offseason, when a runner builds strength, endurance and mental toughness. Ott says his young ladies are committed and one example is junior Gracie Trexler.

“I believe this year we’re dedicated more than we’ve ever been,” Trexler said. “My teammates and I are constantly thinking of ways to prepare for our future season by not just doing what is expected, but more. We run on our off days, weight lift in the offseason, and encourage others to keep working hard.”

Early-season practice sessions set the tone for the next two months.

“Workouts are based on our athletes’ individual race times,” Ott said. “We use this to form groups and set paces for workouts to help each individual improve overall performance.”

In addition to Trexler, who finished last season 12th in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and 15th in District 11 competition, Parkland is counting on senior Elena Wenger big time. She finished 13th in leagues and 10th in districts last year and this season could be even better. Another senior, Jessica Price, is coming off an outstanding junior season in which she took seventh place in the EPC and 12th in districts.

Abbey Bender, a junior, and Lucy Tobia, a sophomore, will factor also into Parkland’s season. Trojan fans should look for junior Lana Hurwitz to contribute as well this fall. Hurwitz was outstanding in the 800, 1,600 and 3200 relay team during the track season.

“I believe her success there will help her find success both individually, but more importantly as a team,” Ott said of Hurwitz.
