Girls soccer is coming off injury-plagued season

The 2021 season was a tough one for the Salisbury High School girls soccer team. The Falcons were short on depth and numbers within the varsity program and injuries to some players did not help matters as they finished the year 3-12-2 overall and 2-8 in the Colonial League.

“Last season was tough for us because of injuries and the lack of numbers,” said head coach Rick Babyak. “We were in a tough spot, but the girls still competed and played hard and I couldn’t have asked for anything more.”

Gone from last year’s team due to graduation are Quinn Wittman, Kathy Medina, Aaliyah M’Bai, Mona Shields, Chase Watto and Krista Bonge.

One of the top returning players for Babyak and his staff this season is All-League goalie and senior captain Hannah Kamp. Her career saves total of 427 to date is a school record, breaking her sister Jordan’s record of 408 career saves set back in 2015.

Along with Kamp, there are numerous other student-athletes that Babyak has credited with working hard to step in to new roles to contribute on the field.

“It is nice to see that many other players have also been stepping up to help with team leadership,” Babyak said. “We have a solid core of newcomers who know how to play this game. The team worked hard through the offseason and has come into camp with a good focus. Our numbers are still a bit low. We could use more players.”

Heading into a new season, there are some goals and expectations that Babyak has for his group.

“I expect to see improvement every practice and every game,” said Babyak. “We have a very good group of players. If team leaders continue to step up and the team continues with a strong work ethic and good attitude we will have our successes this season.”
