LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Celebrating 31 years of independence

Ukrainian-Americans from across the Lehigh Valley gathered at Payrow Plaza in Bethlehem Aug. 24to join countrymen around the world in celebrating the 31st anniversary of the independence of their homeland. Organized by the officers of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, Branch 91, and the Ukrainian-American Veterans Post 42, the hour-long event included brief speeches by members and friends of the Ukrainian community, a keynote address, and colorful dances performed by Kaska, a Ukrainian dance group.

The event opened with an invocation by the Rev. Elizabeth Goudy of the Metropolitan Community Church and the Bethlehem Interfaith Group. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Olena Ogrochina, associate professor of economics at Lafayette College. Olena came to the United States to complete her graduate studies. Close relatives of hers remain in northern Ukraine. She spoke of her worries for them and the commitment of all Ukrainians to victory in the war to defend Ukraine’s independence from Russia.

Mayor J. William Reynolds of Bethlehem and Pa. Representative Steve Samuelson emphasized the city’s commitment to its Ukrainian citizens. State Senator Lisa Boscola and U.S. Representative Susan Wild, who were unable to attend in person, sent representatives to speak on their behalf.

Two performances by Kaska, a Ukrainian folk dance ensemble, highlighted the event. Wearing brilliant costumes that gleamed in the sunlight, the dancers impressed viewers with moves that were both graceful and athletic, the leading female dancer enticing with a “come hither” look, the leading male bounding and leaping in response.

Perfect timing! Two members of Kaska leave the ground at exactly the same moment while looking in opposite directions, a good example of the exacting demands of Ukrainian folk dancing.
