Parkland School School Board recently approved an agreement between Lebanon Valley College and the district for qualified health science students to participate in a clinical internship and practicum experience at Parkland facilities.
The agreement has an initial term of three years and will renew automatically for one-year terms unless terminated by either party.
Board member Jarrett Coleman voted no on the item.
LVC offers various under graduate and graduate health science programs which include exercise science, Master’s degree of athletic training, Master of Science in speech language pathology, Doctor of physical therapy, and Master of Science in mental health counseling.
The district has responsibility for supervision of the college students in their practicum assignments and for providing an organized learning plan with appropriate experiences and qualified mentorships.
The agreement specifies no stipend or monetary consideration will be paid by either the district or the college.
The Lebanon Valley students are subject to Parkland’s policies governing the use and disclosure of educational records and protected health information.
In another matter, the board approved an agreement between Kutztown University and the district for two internship positions for students enrolled in the Master of Education reading specialist program in the department of elementary education.
In exchange for work performed by the student interns, the district will pay KU the annual amount of in-state graduate tuition for 24 credit hours per full academic semester, plus summer sessions, not exceeding $15,000 per student per academic year.
Coleman voted no on the KU interns.
Director of community relations and development Nicole McGalla reported the district has agreements with many colleges throughout the area for student teachers and other school related practicum experiences.
