Traffic issues
Allen Township Board of Supervisors met Aug. 9 to discuss traffic calming measures for East Bullshead Road.
Township Manager Ilene Eckhart said she received multiple calls from an East Bullshead Road resident regarding truck traffic in the area.
The resident lives on Country Road, off East Bullshead Road, and has reportedly had more than one tractor-trailer run over his property when turning around in the cul-de-sac. There are already signs prohibiting trucks posted in the area, but they are not working.
Supervisor Dale Hassler suggested bigger signs on Willowbrook Road before East Bullshead prohibiting truck traffic, listing the height restriction.
“I want [the signs] halfway between the bridge and East Bullshead to give those guys a chance to think and maybe even put two signs in,” Hassler said.
Another suggestion was a roundabout at the intersection of East Bullshead and Willowbrook roads. A roundabout would slow traffic and could be designed in a way that trucks are physically not able to make a right, only go out to Route 329 or back the way they came.
Supervisors made a motion directing Engineer Stan Wojciechowski to prioritize additional signage and look at other traffic calming measures.
Also at the meeting, supervisors discussed the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation July 27 meeting regarding the Indian Trail Road bridge replacement.
Many residents were concerned about high speeds in the area only getting worse with the improved bridge. According to supervisors, the speed limit in that area is 40 mph and decreases to 30 mph in places with elevation changes and sharp turns.
The board approved a motion to send a speed study request to PennDOT for all state roads in the township, including Indian Trail, Howertown and Kreidersville roads, to ensure the posted speeds are correct and safe.
It was announced the Allen Township Planning Commission meeting, which was set for Aug. 15, has been canceled.
The board of supervisors next meet 7 p.m. Aug. 23 at the fire company building, 3530 Howertown Road.
