LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

A borough community figure

Coplay Borough held a ceremony Aug. 3 with a park bench dedication at the borough’s Community Plaza, North Second and Chestnut streets, Coplay.

The tribute was during a music break at the Twilight Concert Series of free performances held several times during the summer at the plaza.

John Schreiner, a longtime Coplay volunteer, died late last year.

Schreiner was a solid volunteer and leader at Coplay Sports years ago. He also was the co-chair of the Coplay Community Days committee for more than a decade.

Schreiner was a solid supporter of the American Club of Coplay. He served more than two decades as a leader with Coplay Whitehall Sewer Authority. He also served for eight years on the Whitehall-Coplay School Board.

Schreiner was a go-to guy for information about local and state elections, having been a political activist for decades. He served as the second vice president of Lehigh County Democratic Executive Committee for many years. He was the leader of Coplay Democratic Club during the late 1970s and ‘80s.

He also was a supporter and member of Coplay Recreation and Welfare Committee. While with the recreation committee, Schreiner was reportedly a principal leader in developing the annual Halloween parade.

Schreiner was also a member of the Knights of Columbus group at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church and was a supporter of the church’s annual church picnic.

Coplay Mayor Stephen Burker officiated the ceremony. The Loy family funded the bench.

Schreiner’s wife, Faye, and their two sons, John and Tyler, attended the bench dedication, along with friends.

Schreiner’s level of volunteerism and drive to better Coplay was deep. He created a large official and volunteer profile in Coplay.

The high level of attendance at the ceremony was a testament to Schreiner’s presence and his love for Coplay.

His volunteer activities are missed by his family, friends and a grateful community.
