Emmaus police celebrate the importance of community-building
Residents of all ages came out in force from across the borough of Emmaus to celebrate with local law enforcement officers, EMS and firefighters a Family Fun Night/Open House Aug. 2 at the Emmaus Police Department. This is the night many police departments across the country celebrate National Night Out.
Held on the first Tuesday of August, this police-community building event has been gaining in popularity in recent years. Over 190 events were reported to have taken place across Pennsylvania this year and Emmaus’ event was a huge success, despite the extreme heat and humidity.
Emmaus Police Chief Jason Apgar told The Press it was under then-Chief Charles Palmer the police department started hosting this community get-together back in 2017. It has now become an invaluable yearly event. The only cancellation was back in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
One of the many highlights of the evening was the special K-9 demonstration by Sgt. Vincent Murante and his K-9 partner Ronny, which focused on obedience and drug search.
Murante explained the importance of local school visits to educate youth about policing. He makes a point of explaining to local students the work he and Ronny, his partner for the last six years, do to help protect the citizens of Emmaus.
Not to be outdone by Ronny, Emmaus High School’s Hornet and Lehigh Valley Phantoms’ mascot meLVin, also captivated the attention of the younger members of the community with their special appearance, as well as dancing and taking pictures with children of all ages.
“This is a special night across the country in which law enforcement agencies as well as fire and EMS have a night dedicated to the community,” Apgar said. “It is a night of fellowship where everyone can have fun, possibly learn something new, meet each other and spend time together while reinforcing that law enforcement is only one aspect of our profession. The interactions we have during this yearly event are something we strive for throughout the year.”
