Holiday weekend enforcement results announced

The Pennsylvania State Police Troop M - Bethlehem recently announced the results of the Independence Day holiday enforcement detail, which started 12:01 a.m. July 1 and ended 11:59 p.m. July 4, according to a news release.

The safety initiative Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement Education Program troopers targeted drivers who aggressively operated their motor vehicles in a manner endangering others, including speeding, seat belt violations and child seat belt infractions.

In addition, Selective Traffic Enforcement Against Drunk Drivers and Drug Recognition Expert troopers specifically focused on apprehending drivers who operated their motor vehicles while allegedly under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

During the traffic enforcement period, Troop M (Lehigh County, Northampton County and Bucks County) troopers investigated a total of 43 crashes and made 41 arrests for allegedly driving under the influence.

Motorists are reminded there will be increased patrols as part of continuing efforts toward traffic safety throughout the summer and particularly during the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Motorists are reminded of the mandates of Title 75 Section 3733, fleeing or attempting to elude police, which stipulates any driver of a motor vehicle who willfully fails or refuses to bring their vehicle to a stop, or who otherwise flees or attempts to elude a pursuing police officer, commits an offense, graded up to a felony of the third degree, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, a $15,000 fine and restitution for damages and/or injuries sustained as a result of the pursuit.
