Becker retires from planning commission
At the July 5 Moore Township Board of Supervisors meeting, John Becker, a longtime planning commission leader, announced his retirement from the commission.
Becker discharged his duty with integrity and attention to detail for decades, it was said.
Becker, along with the board of supervisors and township Solicitor David Backenstoe, reportedly worked to limit the amount of warehouses in the township as they labored with the township’s land and environmental protection board and zoning board to preserve as much farmland and open space as possible.
The goal of all these ongoing efforts is to preserve - to the greatest extent possible - the rural character of Moore Township.
“We will miss John on the planning commission,” township Manager Nicholas C. Steiner said. “He did an excellent job for many years there.”

In other business, the police department received approval to hire a part-time police officer.
The supervisors also approved the purchase of two Ford Explorers for the police department at a cost of about $100,000.
The historical commission is planning its OctoberFest event. It is seeking a new location to hold the popular annual fundraising event. Typically held at the Klecknersville Rangers Fire Department social hall, the event needs to be relocated due to a recent fire and subsequent restoration work.
In his report, Steiner noted the township website is being renovated and will add seven pages.
Steiner is also working to gather information about an upcoming project to address the municipal building’s needed repairs. He said a decision will need to be made if the building will be renovated or torn down and replaced with a new building that also houses the police department and road crew. The supervisors will make the decision after facts and estimates are obtained.
It is anticipated grant funding will pay for much of the municipal building costs, according to Steiner. A meeting is being set up with an architect to gather information.
The next Moore Township supervisors meeting is 6 p.m. Aug. 2 in the township municipal building, 2491 Community Drive. It is an in-person-only meeting.
