Coplay Mayor Stephen Burker received notification around 10:30 a.m. July 23 from PPL Utilities that approximately 55 borough residents were without power due to a transformer outage in the Echo Manor area.
It was expected the power, according to PPL, could take possibly until 5:30 p.m. to be restored. This potential delay was a danger to senior citizens and other vulnerable residents because of that day’s excessive heat and humidity.
Burker quickly made calls to the Coplay Borough Council emergency chairperson and the police chief to develop a plan to address the outage and ensure resident safety.
The plan was put into effect immediately that would ensure the well-being of all affected by the power outage.
A command center was set up at the fire company’s former social hall, 165 Cherry St. The building is air-conditioned and would allow for displaced residents - and even their pets - to remain cool on the hot day.
Beverages and food were available to all those affected by the power outage.
Coplay Sports contacted Burker to offer help in any way that was needed.
Power was restored approximately 1:45 p.m., and no residents experienced difficulties.
Burker said he was delighted with the rapid response from borough officials and residents who worked together to address a potentially life-threatening situation.
