David Lee Fleming
David Lee Fleming, 71, of Marietta, Ga, died June 22, 2022, after being ill a brief period of time, in WellStar Cobb Hospital Austell, Ga.
The son of the late Jean and Karl Fleming, he was born Nov. 29, 1950, in Huntingdon.
The husband of Karen (Smoker) Fleming, the couple married on May 26, 1973, in the Abbey Reformed United Church of Christ, Huntingdon.
He was also the beloved and cherished father of Jennifer J. Fleming.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in administration of justice from The American University in 1972 and a Master of Science degree in counseling psychology from Shippensburg University in 1977.
In addition, he completed postgraduate work at the University of Virginia.
His career was highlighted by serving as the CEO and executive director of various nonprofit agencies in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia, including the position of assistant national executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
He was currently serving as director of parent services for Quality Care for Children, Atlanta, Ga.
An avid Penn State football fan and University of North Carolina basketball fan, he attended games regularly for most of his life; more recently, taking father-daughter sport trips a few times a year.
He enjoyed traveling with his wife and daughter and found joy in making everyone laugh.
He was part of the “All 50 Club,” having visited all 50 states in the United States.
Extremely passionate about his faith, he was a member of the United Church of Christ and served as consistory president of Abbey Reformed UCC, Huntingdon.
He was also a member of Union United Church of Christ, Neffs, where he served as consistory president, chaired the church and ministry committee, chaired the worship committee, served as a lay reader, guest preacher, and member of the capital campaign committee.
He was also involved in the Penn Northeast Conference of the United Church of Christ serving as a moderator, member of the board of directors, chairman of the interim conference minister search committee, conference partner, chairman of the conference meeting planning committee, delegate to conference meetings, member of the nominating committee, member of the budget, mission and interpretation committee, member of the long range planning implementation team member of the staff and personnel committee, member of the church and ministry committee, guest steward and member of the joint conflict resource team.
He also served the United Church of Christ as a delegate to the general synod for six terms, was a member of the Wider Church Ministries board personnel and volunteer ministries committees and was a “God is Still Speaking” trainer.
He currently attended Virginia Highland United Church of Christ, Atlanta, Ga., and was serving as a member of the personnel committee.
In addition to his loving wife of 49 years, Karen, of Marietta, Ga., he is survived by his daughter, Jennifer J. Fleming Esq., of Atlanta; his brother and sister-in-law Dennis Fleming and Annemarie Cleary of Leesburg, Va.; nieces Neal and Claire Fleming of Leesburg; brother-in-law and sister-in-law William V. and Shirley Johnston, West Point, Ga.
He was predeceased by his sister Deborah K. Fleming.
Family and Friends may pay their respects 6-8 p.m. July 22 and from 11 a.m.-noon July 23 at Union UCC, 5550 Route 873, Neffs, PA 18065.
His memorial service will be noon July 23 at Union UCC.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Union United Church of Christ Memorial Fund or to Virginia Highland United Church of Christ, 743 Virginia Ave. NE, Atlanta, GA 30306.
Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory Marietta, Ga. and Heintzelman Funeral Home Schnecksville.
