PHS improves to 11-0 in summer league

With the offseason coming quickly to a close, it’s been a successful summer for the Parkland High School boys basketball team. Heading into the final week of the regular season in the Lehigh Valley Varsity Boys Summer Basketball League, the Trojans were undefeated and looking to secure the top seed and keep the momentum heading into the playoffs next week.

Parkland helped itself out in the matter by defeating Notre Dame of Green Pond last Tuesday evening at Whitehall Middle School to improve to 11-0.

“It’s been a great summer, what more can you say,” said head coach Andy Stephens. “We haven’t lost yet in the league and also went 1-1 in the Philly Live event we played in the other week. That also had some good competition. The guys have been working hard and playing together to get to this point.”

The last two weeks have been quiet for the Trojans. With the Fourth of July holiday and then a bye mixed in there in the league schedule, they have only played two games the last two-plus weeks. But there hasn’t been any type of rust being shown on their end.

“The last two weeks have been slow,” Stephens said. “We have not had many games, but there have been some workouts at the high school we’re running. You want to play as many games as you can in the summer to get better, but you also want to take into account there are guys on vacations and playing other sports. You don’t want to burn them out in the summer.”

Stephens stated that his summer roster from the top to the bottom has contributed and stepped up in one way or another. The team chemistry and work ethic have been some of the strengths of this group, according to the head coach, and they are looking forward to this summer’s success translating to more success this winter season.

“My staff and I have been happy with the contributions and effort by our guys,” said Stephens. “Everyone is playing hard and competing. These guys want to win. We’re hoping to finish strong and stay healthy by the end of the summer. We’re really excited for the upcoming season. The guys are hungry and again, they want to compete and be successful.”
