Whitehall’s Legion team survived an opening-round scare against Allentown on Tuesday.
The team got off to a hot start but had to fight off an Allentown rally before ending up with a 9-7 victory and moving on in the winner’s bracket of the Lehigh Valley Legion playoffs.
Whitehall scored four in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the second to lead 6-2 after two innings. But Allentown would score one in the third and four in the fourth to take a 7-6 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Whitehall would score three of its own to take the lead for good.
In that fourth inning, Jace Duld singled, scoring a run, while Matt Rader singled and also scored, and Ryan Hausman singled, scoring as well.
Tyler Mastropieri and Nick Lindenmuth shut the door to preserve the win. Mastropieri went two innings, allowing two hits but striking out five batters over that span. Lindenmuth allowed a hit and picked up a strikeout in the final inning for the save.
Lindenmuth was also hot at the plate and went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Rader had two RBIs while going 2-for-3. Duld drove in two runs and scored two while finishing 1-for-3. Hausman went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
