Stingrays get past Quakertown

The Bethlehem Stingrays knocked off the Quakertown Dolphins, 352-228, in a Suburban Swim League meet on June 27 at Bethlehem.

“They’re definitely a bigger, stronger team, so we had to be ready to go,” said Stingrays head coach Evan Kocon, who is assisted by Diana Kocon, Elyssa Kocon, Laurie Muller, Chris Black, and Samantha Taylor.

The Stingrays kicked off the meet with a first-place finish in the girls 8 & Under 100 freestyle relay swum by Alana Darcy, Sophia Lezinsky, Anna Stewart, and Abigail York (1:43.05).

Other winners in 8 & Unders were Stewart in the 25 butterfly (27.81), Landon Black, also in 25 fly (32.24), and Ethan Sperandio in 25 backstroke (32.97).

Bethlehem’s 9-10 girls won the 100 medley relay with the foursome of Lena Blazure, Alexandra York, LeLe Waldman, and Liliana Fink (1:21.94), and the 9-10 boys won the same event on the combination of Logan Lech, Theo Collins, Liam Powers, and Jacen Estrella (1:38.40).

In 9-10 individual events, winners included York in the 25 breaststroke (21.33), and Collins in the same event (26.74), Waldman in 25 fly (18.06) and 25 back (20.97), Collins in 25 fly (22.32) and 25 free (18.14), Powers in 25 back (23.05), and Blazure in 25 free (16.54).

“We’re pretty level across the board. Our 10 & Under girls are really strong, and most of them are nine, and the 8 & Unders are seven or less and are doing a really good job coming on as young kids. For some, this is their first experience on a swim team ever,” Kocon said. “As far as the younger kids, we had to cap our age groups at 8 & Under girls and 10 & Under girls, so as far as numbers go, we’re loaded (135).”

The 11-12 boys took first place in the 100 medley relay with Jack Amato, Joshua Baluta, Adam Barlow, and Desmond Murray (1:13.22).

Also in the 11-12 age group, Daisy Stewart was the winner of the 50 breast (45.10), the 100 IM (1:33.57), and the 50 fly (42.90). Barlow also won the 50 fly (37.40). Keira Darcy was the first-place 50 backstroker (46.85), and Barlow won the 50 free (34.01).

In 13-14 events, Christian Hackett swam to a first-place finish in the 50 free (28.57), the 100 IM (1:14.54), and the 50 fly (33.96), Leah Onia won the 50 breast (40.22) as well as Leo Negron (43.09), Audrey Bloss-Ferry won the 100 IM (1:20.80) and the 100 free (1:11.68), and Andrew Bays took first in the 50 back (37.49).

Addison Collins, Malcolm Collins, Patrick Gilhool, and Danny Lehr teamed up to win the 13 & Over 200 medley relay for the Stingrays (1:54.84).

In 15 & Over events, winners were Addison Collins in the 50 free (24.79), the 100 IM (1:04.47), and the 100 free (56.69), Natalie Brezinsky in the 50 breast (35.87), the 100 IM (1:11.38), and the 100 free (1:03.75), and Malcolm Collins in 50 breast (32.25).

“We have our older boys coming back from high school, so we’re super talented up there,” said Kocon. “We’re fortunate to keep our older kids in the water; that’s 13-14 and 15 & Overs.”

Bethlehem closed down the meet with both crescendo relay victories: Sophia Lezinsky, Daisy Stewart, Chelsea Hearn, Lilah McClarin, and Blazure for the girls (2:25.63), and Harrison Geiger, Amato, Malcolm Collins, Hackett, and Lech for the boys (2:19.19).

The Stingrays are currently undefeated with earlier-season victories over Palmerton, Lower Macungie, and Whitehall.
