Moore clinches the third seed

In most circles, the number 13 always is considered unlucky. For the Moore Township Redhawks of the Lehigh Valley Connie Mack League it is a welcomed thought.

The Redhawks – mainly comprised of Northampton players – began the week with a 13-game winning streak, lifting their overall mark to 14-3. They began their season with a 1-3 mark.

Manager Jarad Haupt stated that his team had locked up the number three seed for the playoffs, but they still had an outside shot at being the number two team, gaining an automatic bid to the state tournament in Limeport. The Redhawks had one game remaining and it would depend on how Northern Valley finished.

“If Northern Valley stumbled in any of their final three games, we would have a shot,” said Haupt. “But they had a favorable schedule.

“This is a team with a lot of resiliency, and they have taken everything in stride.”

Haupt believes his team doesn’t panic.

“We can be down three runs in the fifth, and we’ll keep going,” he said. “Most teams would start packing up.

“In fact, we were just down 3-0 in the fourth innings our last two games and pulled it out.”

Haupt’s recipe for success has been fundamentals.

“The kids have been fighting and clawing,” added Haupt. “We’re running the bases well, and playing small ball. We’re doing the little things right. Our hitting has been consistent, and we have had good pitching all season.”

Mason Haupt - the coach’s son - leads the team with a .524 average and a team-high 20 RBIs. Brayden Rader (.484) and Jed Coyler (.436) also have been above the .400 mark all season. Billy Stuhldreher (.350) has raised his level of play at the plate.

Haupt also leads the team with four wins followed by Owen Laury and Jake Northstein, and Brody Graff had two wins.

“We have been swinging the bats well,” said Haupt. “On the other hand, we have allowed 26 runs in our 13 wins.

“Our guys have put it all together.”

Haupt was optimistic that his club could keep its momentum in the postseason. The Redhawks will have a first-round bye and may not play again until the 13th.

“These kids have earned a day or two off,” said Haupy. “We’ll do what we can to get in practice.

“But these kids are focused, and we have a good chemistry. We’ll be ready.”
