Hoops Roundup: Men’s league, high school updates
Catasauqua’s summer basketball leagues are in its final regular-season stage this week, and their postseasons are around the corner.
In the Catty League, Elwood Landscaping and Ohlson Landcaing are vying for the top spot in the 10-team league, and Carmaci Dental sits top the 10-team field in the North Catty League.
“It has been another good season,” said longtime Catty League director Eric Snyder. “The teams and the games have been pretty competitive.
“We’re looking forward to a good round of the playoffs ahead.”
In the past, Sndyer organized and directed the “Tournament of Champions” in late July or early August that featured teams competing from around the greater Lehigh Valley leagues, Due to the dissolution of many leagues last summer, Snyder wasn’t able to register enough teams. It marked the first time in 30 years in 30 years the tournament wasn’t held.
Instead, Snyder formed the “Battle of the Boroughs,” in which the champions of the Catty and North Catty Leagues met in a best-of-three series. The concept was developed from the old New York Mayor’s Trophy Game, which featured the Mets playing the Yankees.
In the inaugural contest last summer, the Nites defeated Ohlson Landscaping, 71-59.
Snyder is confident the format can again be in place in early August.
“It looks like a go,” he said. ”It’s a shame that we won’t see the tournament again. There just aren’t any leagues around anymore.
“We should be on schedule for another Battle of the Boroughs.”
Snyder also has his high school team in the Cedar Beach Summer League, and the Rough Riders had two regular-season games remaining. They began the week with an overall 4-6 record, but Snyder isn’t positive about the playoff arrangement.
The Rough Riders are scheduled to compete in the Lehigh Valley Awesome Fest July 28-31 at Cedar Beach. It will end their summer play.
“Our young kids have continued to play well,” said Snyder. “We’re looking to have a good finish. We should have a solid team this winter.”
As far as the regular season, Snyder hopes the team can have a night to honor legendary Roughies’ standout Larry Miller, who was recently inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame. Miller scored 2,722 points and grabbed 2,062 rebounds at Catasauqua before he had a highly touted career at North Carolina.
“We wanted to do something, but COVID got in the way,” said Snyder. “We hope we can have a night to honor him.”
