South Whitehall’s June 15 commissioners’ meeting was led by David M. Kennedy, with all members in attendance. Board President Diane Kelly attended virtually.
Four previously advertised ordinances pertaining to building, residential, plumbing and property maintenance code were approved.
A resolution to appoint Herb Bender as interim township manager effective July 1 was approved.
Bender served as the township’s public works manager.
“I have the utmost respect for you and trusting you,” Commissioner Michael Wolk said, addressing Bender. “You will have my unconditional support as our interim township manager.
“You have impeccable integrity. You’re a strong leader with very effective communication.
“You are very action oriented and you’re a problem solver who gets results. I see that you’re already rising to the occasion beyond your public works role with creative thinking and new improvement ideas. I look forward to watching you demonstrate what you can do in this new position.”
Randy Cope the current interim township manager was presented with a plaque by Michael Wolk because he was the oldest serving board member present.
Later Wolk read the proclamation given to Cope.
“South Whitehall Township distinguished service award presented to Randall T. Cope. The South Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners, township staff and citizens of South Whitehall Township would like to recognize your eight years of service to South Whitehall Township beginning April 14, 2014, to July 1.
“We thank you for your stellar service as parks and recreation manager, director of township operations and as interim township manager.
“Your outstanding commitment to our township has truly been an example and inspiration to all.
“Therefore, it is with great pride and appreciation that the board of commissioners and township staff hereby approved presents this token of our gratitude to you Randall T. Cope, and it’s been an honor and a privilege to work with you. We are deeply grateful to you. We wish you the very best in your future endeavors. Please know you will be greatly missed.”
In other matters, the meeting began with a moment of silence for Bob Hebel, whom Fire Inspector John Frantz, said, “passed away after a valiant fight against cancer.
“Bob was 57 years old. Bob served the township as a life member of the Greenawald’s Fire Company joining in 1978 and serving as chief from 1994-2002.”
Wehr’s Dam was listed under old business on the agenda.
Cope said the township did not receive any bids; however, he was encouraged by the interest shown.
The township will open bids July 8 and the board is expected to award the contract by July 20.
