Sheckler teacher earns educator award

Sheckler Elementary School STEAM/art teacher Dan Kotran recently earned a Da Vinci Science Center STEAM Educator Award.

He was honored at an April 26 award ceremony and was recognized at the May 10 Catasauqua Area School District Board of Education meeting.

Da Vinci Science Center honors three educators who “go above and beyond to engage students in high-quality, innovative STEAM program that integrate subjects and connect the classroom to the real world,” according to its website.

In addition, five students are also recognized.

Kotran was nominated for the award by Jennifer Moyer, Sheckler Elementary learning support teacher. Nominations were due in mid-February. Kotran then submitted a grant proposal to Da Vinci and held a video interview with the selection committee.

In a video announcing the winners from Da Vinci Science Center, Kotran said he likes to help students create and be “active users.” He also noted he uses computer science and technology with his students.

Kotran reported he is inspired by Bill Nye, a popular television presenter, science communicator and mechanical engineer. His show, “Bill Nye the Science Guy” ran from September 1993 to February 1999 and sought to engage youth in the scientific process.

Kotran said he tries to channel Bill Nye’s style in his classes, while incorporating more technology and art.

Winning educators receive a $1,000 cash grant to invest in STEAM education supplies or programs, and students receive $2,000 in scholarship funds. Kotran reported he is planning to use the funds to expand the STEAM curriculum and invest in new technology and equipment.

“Thanks for being one of the top STEAM educators in the Lehigh Valley,” Superintendent of Schools Robert Spengler said at the May 10 school board meeting.

He also noted that, of the three winning educators, Kotran is the only elementary school teacher.

Kotran took the time to thank the school board and district administration for their support in helping him build the STEAM program at Sheckler.

“It was a great way to share what our little school district can do,” Kotran said of his winning the award.
