Fall sports registration is open to young athletes in Upper Milford

The numbers are in and they are impressive.

The Borough of Emmaus - Upper Milford Township Joint Environmental Advisory Council released totals in its annual Earth Day clean up event held April 23.

Volunteers, including Scouts from local troops, members of service clubs such as the Emmaus Rotary and Kiwanis clubs and other groups, worked together to pick up trash and clear debris and litter at area locations. Residents of both municipalities brought items to shred as well as electronics to recycle.

According to a memorandum on the event, items collected included:

• 59 30 gallon bags of trash

• Seven 30 gallon bags of recyclables

• 13,735 pounds of electronic waste

• 121,212 pounds of paper

Sites cleared and cleaned by volunteers included Emmaus Community Park, Lenape Park and the Harold G. Fulmer Nature Preserve; the walking trail within The Fields at Indian Creek 55+ adult community as well as railroad beds near Weis Markets, CVS Pharmacy and Triple Sun Spirits Company.

Volunteers joined forces in similar efforts in Lower Milford Township, also April 23, in that township’s Earth Day cleanup.

Township organizers provided gloves, safety vests, garbage bags and maps to volunteers who then marked the location of each filled bag on their given map to turn in when they returned to the municipal building for a free lunch.

Volunteer spirit and community involvement are alive and well in the townships.

Volunteers also are welcome in other arenas in the townships.

For example, the Upper Milford Youth Association welcomes volunteers to help with sports in the township. Registration is now open for fall sports. Athletes ages 5 to 19 may participate in soccer, basketball, baseball and softball through UMYA. Registration is available on UMYA.org.

With all this talk of spring and fall, summer must not be overlooked. Summer is prime farmers market season and township residents may want to stop at local farm stands as well as visit local farmers at area markets.

The Upper Milford Farmers Market is held 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekends at the municipal building, 5671 Chestnut St.

Local growers also participate in the Emmaus and Macungie farmers markets, Sundays and Thursdays respectively. There is nothing quite so yummy as locally grown produce.

The next meeting of the Lower Milford Township board of supervisors is 6:30 p.m. July 21 at the township building, 7607 Chestnut Hill Church Road.

The Upper Milford Township board of supervisors next meet 7 p.m. July 7 and July 21 at the township building, 5671 Chestnut St. A Zoom option also is offered. Visit the township website for details.
