Summertime block party
St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church’s annual block party was, by all measures, a success. The event was held June 23-25 around the area of the church, located at 122 Union St., Catasauqua.
Kim Smith, block party director, not only coordinated the event but also pitched in at food stands and wherever else help was needed.
The attendee turnout was excellent, as people were socializing, enjoying good food and refreshments and playing games of chance and kids’ activities. There was also a raffle that contained a wide variety of baskets from which to choose.
Dave and Denise Continenza, of Whitehall, were happy to reconnect with friends as they hung out with Tom and Carol Sist.
Dan Wade, with D.H. Productions, provided 1960-’80s music that had some attendees dancing and singing along. Wade is a deejay for all occasions.
The party ambience was one of fellowship and noticeable good cheer and fun.
The block party was elaborate, with an extensive food court and a diversity of drinks and desserts. It included ample seating and tables for attendees, games and an adult beverage stand.
Steve Zelinsky, of Catasauqua, attended with his large but docile St. Bernard, Hunter.
Bingo was held in the church recreation hall. Bill Moyer was the bingo caller. Dave Seglets was the card dealer and bingo fee collector. Both enjoyed their charge to make the bingo games a success.
Charlene Stevens, one of many bingo winners, was delighted when her card warranted her the opportunity to shout, “Bingo!” When asked if she would put her bingo winnings toward a Caribbean island trip, she smiled and said, “Probably not.”
Catasauqua Fire Department was present with its aerial ladder truck, which was a hit with the kids. They were amazed to see how high the ladder can stretch.
All food, beverages and desserts were purchased through tickets. Ticket sellers Mary Ellen Deutsch and Lynn Kappes, of Catasauqua, noted the block party was well attended each day based on ticket sales. There was a constant stream of people purchasing food.
Numerous volunteers diligently worked to make the block party a success. Event volunteers felt a sense of satisfaction as they were part of another successful event at St. Mary’s.
Because of their family fun, these summer events are often called “calendar markers” as people mark their calendar ahead of time. The anticipation of social gatherings, such as this block party, creates reconnections for different generations to enjoy on many levels.
