PHS boys tennis season ends in state doubles tournament

The 2022 Parkland boys tennis season came to an end after a tight match last Friday.

Dan Zolotarev and Fyodor D’Souza fell to Lower Merion’s Stoyan Angelov and Adam Lee last Friday in the first round of the PIAA Class 3A Boys Doubles Championship at the Hershey Racquet Club by a score of 7-5, 7-6 (5).

The Parkland duo were individual stars during the season in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles slots. Zolotarev had a superb season in this capacity, winning every match save for losing to Freedom’s Noah Potts twice and to Liberty’s Shayaan Farhad in the District 11 Class 3A tournament. D’Souza was undefeated during the regular season.

The two solo senior stars joined forces twice during the regular season in doubles play. Parkland coach Michael Hingston revived their partnership during the District 11 Class 3A doubles tournament and the decision paid off, producing the school’s only entry into state play.

Overall the Trojans had a 17-1 season and were 14-0 in the EPC. Zolotarev and D’Souza were the catalysts of this record, but it was a team effort. Junior Josh Thomas played No. 3 singles and won every match. While Zolotarev and D’Souza were rightfully lauded this season for their leadership and tennis acumen, Thomas was superb in his own right.

The doubles play was surprisingly good. The duo of Lucas Lee and Kevin Yao won every No. 2 double match they played during the regular season. No. 3 doubles Taehyuk Yang and Ryan Wu won all regular season matches save for one. No. 4 Rithik Raghuraman and Noah Oxfeld played well also.
