At the Whitehall-Coplay Communities That Care meeting May 20, group members discussed the Pennsylvania Youth Survey.
The survey is taken by select grade levels every two years to explore how different risk and protective factors affect the students in the district. This information is used to inform programming for future school years.
All members are invited to take part in the data review process. Chapter topics include use and access of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs; anti-social behavior; community and school climate and safety; social and emotional health; and systemic factors.
In other business, Melissa Fausey, systems change specialist at Penn State EPISCenter, touched base with the coalition checkup project the CTC is taking part in. One of the focus areas identified was increased communication within the coalition as well as with the community.
To assist with this goal, the CTC added a monthly presentation on a different program offered within the district to help increase awareness among the members about the various programs and services.
Additionally, the group’s brochure has been updated, and the next item of interest is yard signs. It had been discussed making yard signs with positive PAYS data points to be placed throughout the area to spread public awareness about the group and its efficacy in the school district.
While group members are reviewing the PAYS data, they were asked to pick out one or two positive data points that could be shared on the signs.
The CTC members often share recognition and kudos to emphasize the important work by the group’s members. This month, Michelle Khouri, district registrar and community outreach, was recognized for two events she coordinated in the district. The Family Night was reportedly a success, with more the 1,000 people attending. She also organized a donation event, which supplied more than 300 people with clothing, toiletries, books, household items and more.
Also recognized was Whitehall-Coplay School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Steckel for his leadership in the district and for emphasizing the importance of the school, community and families all working together.
During the committee reports, Jennifer Green, a caseworker with Lehigh County Office of Children and Youth Services, noted she received a lot of positive feedback from parents regarding the programs offered in the district, such as CBITS and Bounce Back. The students have also reportedly said they got a lot out of the programs.
It was also reported Lehigh Valley Health Network Behavioral Health is adding a second therapist to its school-based services program for the 2022-23 school year as the need for those services has increased since the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
The next Whitehall-Coplay CTC meeting is set for 8:30 a.m. June 17.
