Student receives scholar award

Kaitlyn Furst

of Schnecksville, was named the recipient of the Moravian College 2020-21 Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award.

Kaitlyn, who is completing her senior year at Moravian as a music and sociology double major (B.A.), with a minor in English, and is known as the school’s Presser Scholar.

The highly coveted Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award is presented annually to a music student entering his or her senior year who has shown extraordinary musical and academic accomplishments.

The Presser Award is considered the most prestigious undergraduate award in music and is provided by the Presser Foundation that awards annual scholarships, grants and funds for the furthering of music education and music throughout America.

In addition to being named to Moravian’s dean’s list every semester and earning a 3.85 overall GPA, Kaitlyn is also a managing editor of Moravian’s Comenian newspaper and is an honors candidate in music with her thesis being “Jazz Music and its Significance During the Holocaust.”

She was recently named student director of the Moravian College Big Band and will be a featured alto saxophone soloist during her senior year.

Kaitlyn has been nominated to and is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society, Alpha Kappa Delta, an international honor society for Sociology, and Phi Eta Sigma, an American freshman honor society.

She also served for two seasons as the feature twirler for the Moravian College Marching Band.

She graduated from Parkland High School in 2018 were she served as a drum major for the Marching Band and was a charter member and served as an officer of the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

During her senior year, she received the Parkland High School Music Boosters Scholarship and Louis Armstrong Jazz Award.

She is the daughter of Stephen and Carolyn Furst of Schnecksville.

She plans on attending law school upon her graduation from Moravian College.
